Gospel Reading - Jesus Dies on the Cross
44By now it was noon, and darkness fell across the whole landa for three hours, until three o’clock. 45The light from the sun was gone — and suddenlyb the thick veil hanging in the Temple split apart.
46Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I commit my spirit to you,” and with those words he died.c
. . . . .Luke 23:44-46- Or “the whole world.”
- Implied
- Literally, “he yielded up the spirit.”
Lord,
grant us trust in you
that when our time on earth in ended
our spirits may come to you without delay.
Station 14
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Gospel Reading - Jesus is Placed in the Tomb
57When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, one of Jesus’ followers, 58went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. And Pilate issued an order to release it to him. 59Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and placed it in his own new rock-hewn tomb, and rolled a great stone across the entrance as he left.
. . . . .Matthew 27:57-60NB: It may be that Joseph of Arimathea was actually a family member of Jesus, a relative of his mother Mary. Traditionally only relatives of those who died on a cross could request and be granted the body of a crucifixtion victim. But he was still a hidden family member/follower and now revealing this he was putting himself at great risk.
Lord,
grant us your compassion
that we may always provide for those in need.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
your passion and death is the sacrifice that unites earth and heaven
and reconciles all people to you.
May we who have faithfully reflected on these mysteries
follow your will
and so come to share your glory in heaven
where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
