The Exalted One

Christ Jesus was in the form of God:
yet he did not think to grasp at equality with God,
but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant:
and was born in our human likeness.
Being found in our human state, he humbled himself:
and became obedient unto death,
even death on a cross.
Therefore God has highly exalted him:
and bestowed on him
the Name above every name;
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow:
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord:
to the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

Gospel Reading - Jesus calls Matthew (Levi)

thumb

27Later on as Jesus left the town he saw a tax collector — with the usual reputation for cheating — sitting at a tax collection booth. The man’s name was Levi. Jesus said to him, “Come and be one of my disciples!” 28So Levi left everything, sprang up, and went with him.

29 Soon Levi held a reception in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests were there.

30But the Pharisees and teachers of the Law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples about his eating with such notorious sinners.

31Jesus answered them, “It is the sick who need a doctor, not those in good health. 32My purpose is to invite sinners to turn from their sins, not to spend my time with those who think themselves already good enough.”

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
     hallowed be your name,
     your kingdom come,
     your will be done,
          on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
     and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
     now and for ever.
Amen.
